Yes I have been poorly with germs so hence no posts for a couple of weeks, but Im back. One upside of being sofa bound was doing lots of crochet. I have been super excited about the workshop coming up on the 6th and trying out my design for little winter cottages (hanging decoration).
I was searching through some old photos and came across some early stitchy creations, its weird to think how far I have come in 3 years!
Here I am with my two in the k20 gallery in Dusseldorf nearly 3 years ago when I first felt that it could be possible to become an artist. I had all but given up on my dreams.
Im currently constructing a piece made from different textures and fabrics and crocheting them together. This will form part of the body of work I am doing for ‘Touch’ which is art on the autistic spectrum.
All the pieces are being designed to be touched and explored with the hands as well as the eyes. This was born out of the frustration of my autistic son going to exhibitions and not being allowed to touch anything. My son is under-sensed and seeks sensory experiences, its an important part of how he experiences the world around him, this can be the same for other people with a sensory impairment, learning difficulty or alike.
I totally understand that if artists work was handled all the time it would be inappropriate but not if the work is designed to be touched, smelt and in Joel’s case even tasted?
Joel making felt.
Places for the textile workshop at Southsea’s very own Edwardian playhouse ‘The Kings Theater (click on link to book) are filling up fast. So why not come and spend the day hanging out in this amazing building making stuff, listening to music, eating cake and drinking tea. Whats not to love?
The theme is ‘Kitschmas’ you know a kitsch Christmas? So check out the Heather Bailey ‘Yo Yo Garland’ we will be stitching our very own yo yo’s to adorn the garland as well as other multi coloured beauties, think vintage fabrics, candy colours and winter brights!
Its not your traditional white and reds but it will compliment traditional style with a vintage country style twist!
Im having a wee pre-Christmas sale on Etsy, the knit kit is now half price!
As well as a reduced rabbit (sound bizarre) and the fabric covered notebooks are reduced too!
Remember I am still taking orders for Christmas so drop me line if you have a request, it could be anything. A Squirrel listening to hip hop stuffed toy to bunting exclaiming that you love pizza!
For a while now I have felt its important that makers/crafters should come together to share skills, socialise and learn from each other. The south coast has a huge variety of artists and makers who are working away so it would be nice to get to know you. If you would be up for forming an alliance then please leave a comment or email me oohlalapin.gmail.com I can arrange a venue for monthly meet ups and workshops.
This could include;
the list is endless, but if you have a DIY attitude and a love of sharing then get in touch!
So tomorrow I open my home at 1.30pm for afternoon tea, cake and craft!
Come and get some great ideas for crafty Christmas makes, how to recycle that old cushion or jumper and general chit chat and lovliness.
